Blue Birds of Happiness

by Chris Sorrenti

When a Great Heron flies over your head
consider it a positive
the Blue bird of happiness
heralding a good day to come

Productive morning at work
the day before Friday
then off to the National Gallery
at 1PM with a close friend
to check out 60s art
and avant-garde photography
art and photography
being the key words
a bond that keeps we blue birds flying
even if more often than not these days
at half mast
just something anything
to break the monotony
of family illness and work routine

In April’s pouring rain
we make our way to the gallery
neither of us carrying an umbrella
neither of us caring
after me telling you the story
that Great Blue Heron on both our minds
walking past the U.S. embassy
its flag at half mast for a reborn pope

At Second Cup
free of the electronics that both stifle
and propel us forward
over a steaming mug of memories
we catch up on the defeats and victories
of middle class life
a timeless scene
that could compete with any Van Gogh
hanging at the gallery

No one would need convincing it will outlast
all the workloads and illnesses in all the offices
doctors’ examination rooms
that sadly dominate their Monets

I’m confident that someday
long after we’ve guaranteed
our Second Cup painting’s immortality
Great Blue Herons will still fly over this city
each carrying with it a positive memory
for those below
