I did and didn’t know
this day would come
premonition
mixed feelings of
elation and dread
returned in the night
scratching at the back door

sowing your wild oats already
down to skin and bones
yet how could you have survived
two weeks outdoors
a good Samaritan perhaps
and now the old defenses
are back up
amid purr loud
frequent jaw rubs

maybe getting you fixed
is the best escape after all?
and then we can see if
a cat named Morty
really does have nine lives
