Love Interrupted

by Melissa Arel

the true and lovely flame that burned between us
has since turned this heart to charcoal, blackened and ash.
the fire that once consumed me with its orange-red glow
feasted upon everything in its path, including me.

and you took what you needed, you drank deeply from my wells
i fed your mind and your soul giving you the most sacred parts of me.
and you gave me shelter in your arms, courage in your words
my name felt safe upon your lips, resting beside your kiss.

but our love was never meant to be; unexpected and interrupted
it drew its last breath long after we were through.
the true and lovely flame that burned between us
has since turned this heart to charcoal, blackened and ash.

From what limited interactions I've had with you, I do not believe your heart is fully charcoal, blackened or ash; withdrawn into a protective shell perhaps. Bruised & singed, but moving ever on.

Gracious, very intense. I know very well so many parts of this poem, as you know! Especially the first stanza.
