To a Former Student Dying of Cancer by Leonard M HawkesClay, I met your son again
In school today—
A bright and friendly boy—
Much like you were then.
He told me the time is growing short.
I just wanted to thank you
For becoming what every teacher
Hopes his students will become.
And I look forward to that day
When we’ll sing together once more
Those old, well loved German songs.
