Between Lego and Skyscraper

by Chris Sorrenti

We mould you with love
layer upon layer;
on sunny afternoon beaches,
evening heart to heart walks,
prepping you for that time
of newfound hormones;
we having already met
the uncertain years
have building blocks
to guide you.

You chatter exuberantly
with all a ten year old knows,
your world already
so different from ours,
making the same promise
to us about cigarettes and drugs,
we knowing the supply's just as good,
variety better,
and that peer pressure never changes.

Hopeful our wisdom's construction
will carry you safely,
we pray that passage
between Lego and skyscraper
a minimal bumpy ride;
all those sunny afternoon beaches,
evening heart to heart walks
paying a handsome dividend;
love returned in the knowledge
your success will be a tower.
