Trouble by Chris Sorrenti
I heard the sound of chopper blades
cutting through the air
looked up - saw the Huey coming
aluminium plated eagle cast in olive drab
it reminded me of Vietnam
all the young men who’d died there
barely out of high school
so much to look forward to
so much to lose
no you don’t have to go far
when looking for trouble
it’s waiting just around the next corner
I saw a girl hitchhiking
“It won’t happen to me”
the words written across her face
I felt that I should pick her up
even just to scold her
then imagined her naked body
lying battered in some field
not wanting to be identified
as the last one to see her alive
I drove on - looked ahead
not wanting any trouble
sometimes I’d like to tell my boss where to go
though I’d only be asking for trouble
life has changed since those rebel days
of sex and drugs and rock n’ roll
when you’re a father in the making
bringing home the bacon
you feel that necktie tighten
around your throat - and wrists
no I haven’t got the time anymore
to go looking round for trouble
