THEY MAY BE RIGHT

by W. Mahlon Purdin

The angry people have made me feel stupid.
They may be right. That hurts the most.
They may be right …
That equality is a bridge too far;
That freedom is a bludgeon used to get our way;
That prejudice is a natural thing;
That fairness is weakness;
That institutions are just gatherings of failure;
That hate is the antidote to life’s broken promise;
That tradition is a trick to fool us;
That campaign talk is like locker room talk;
That fear is a rallying cry that calls us to battle;
That truth has no place in winning;
That sleep is something that offers no rest;
That hoping is a foolish way to spend your time;
That worst case scenarios always come true;
That you can’t trust me, and I can’t trust you.

They may be right, but I can’t do it.
I still see the dreams all around,
I still want to help,
I still love people who don’t agree with me,
I still think love is all,
I still hope.

Upside down. Your last stanzas give the reader relief and hope.
