The Collector

by Chris Sorrenti

he answered himself
as to why he did this thing
by only adding more items
to his treasure trove
hundreds of videotaped
documentaries and movies
some he'd never watch again
though happy
they'd always be there

sometimes
the silence proved too much
and so he would venture out
into the collected city
for there were others in fact
very much like himself
though some of the things they collected
were different

model train clubs and ceramics classes
were havens for these denizens
of numerical bliss
as the quality rang out
in each individual piece
quintessential in its movement of the heart

but still
there was something missing
that all the collecting in the world
could not take away
he saw it in the pretty traffic recorders
tallying the vehicles as they passed him
and it touched him in a most romantic way
when another beauty waved
with a swoosh of her butterfly net

and somewhere within this realm
lay the ultimate unplucked treasure
all that would be needed
a common environment to grow
having finally collected each other
