Until We Meet Again, Ernie Coombs by Chris Sorrenti RIP 1927-2001
most won’t recognize that name
but millions know the face
that never angry, always smiling
soft spoken man
with old fashioned dark rimmed glasses
who over thirty years
taught and entertained
countless Canadian kids
on days off from school
or snuggled under blanket
with thermometer in mouth
long before Sesame Street
Mr. Dressup carried the day
still recalled
the childhood excitement
when the opening piano
would begin to play
with puppet sidekicks
Casey, the mop haired boy
and Finnegan
a dog that never talked
…or barked
wide eyed we’d watch
Mr. Dressup’s skill
with scissors, glue
construction paper
and all the things with them
he could make
then in amused anticipation
wait for the tickle trunk
to be opened
amazed that unlike mom and dad’s
a trunk could hold so much
over the years, from it
Mr. Dressup happily donning
an endless supply of costumes
"Until we meet again," Ernie, sadly
the tickle trunk is now closed indefinitely
