today was a day of firsts...

a radio talk show suddenly preempted by news flash
with words so incredible in their assemblage
meaning extended into the surreal

quickly turned the television on to CNN
saw one of the towers of the World Trade Center on fire
supposedly hit by an airliner

“OK” I thought - that’s possible
recalling from the history books
a B-25 bomber crashed into the Empire State Building in 1945
but due to bad weather - pilot disorientation

the skies over New York today were sunny and clear

continuing to follow the coverage
not long after saw the second tower hit by another airliner
then said to myself “too much of a coincidence -
what’s going on here?”

reporting then switched to the Pentagon in Washington
it too hit by an airliner
not long after
a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania

hours later
saw both towers of the WTC one after another
come crashing down - imploding
as if a planned detonation on Discovery Channel
though unlike this
it showed no couple holding hands
as they jumped from the top of the building

the whole chain of events played over and over
on every network - ad nauseam

today was a day of firsts...

I pray also a day of lasts
