July in September by Chris Sorrenti
there’s deception in this heat
for behind the trickery
of blazing sun
oppressive humidity
leaves yet to change color
a practical joke most cruel
autumn’s Trojan horse
waits patiently
to break the balm
cooling nights foreshadowing
what has always laid ahead
let us not forget
children are back in school
store windows already cluttered
with Winter’s wear
and though barbecues still sizzle
crickets serenade for that special mate
amidst Summer’s bounty
other red breasted friends
have quietly slipped away
to begin their southern vacation
