American Atlas

by D. Xavier Bari

(a.k.a. Atlas Lied)

As children there were stories,
that an ageless titan
held up the heavens
as a service to the world
and punishment for itself.

Almost noble.
         Almost helpful.
Putting the heavens
         just beyond our reach.

What a plan,
to keep Olympus aloft
and the world aground.

Forever.

All our lives at its feet,
lower than the servant
they sent to oppress us.
