Marionettes

by Chris Sorrenti

There was a time when I wanted you
Felt the earth move when you’d cross the line
You were cool and everyone knew it
Dressed in leather and cigarette smoke
But now you’re just a puppet
Dancing on a string
Wrapped around his little finger
Now you’re his everything

There was a time when you wanted me too
Felt the earth move when I’d cross the line
I was cool and everyone knew it
Dressed in leather and a Chevy four-barrel
But now I’m just a puppet
Dancing on a string
Wrapped around her little finger
Now I’m her everything

There was a time when I saw the parallel
Read us between the lines
Guess your smoke rings just blurred my vision
Or maybe I inhaled too many exhaust fumes
Only saw what I wanted to
When all I needed was a little faith
To carry me onto your stage of life
To forever dance beside you

And now we’re both just puppets
Dancing on a string
Wrapped around someone else’s fingers
Now we’re their entertainment
We’re their everything
Now we’re both just puppets
Dancing on a string
Now we’re their entertainment
Now we’re their everything
