A good friend recently asked me
If I’d ever saved someone’s life

Taking her literally
I immediately said “No”

Afterwards though
I began to think
And metaphorically speaking
Came to the realization
I had saved her life
As she had mine

Come to think of it
I had in fact saved many lives over the years
In various small ways
And many had saved me

As I imagined my life without those people
The implications quickly became unpleasant
Even frightening
