On The Life Span Of Sports Socks

by Chris Sorrenti

my favorite kind of footwear
at the end of the day
keeping these ol’ dawgs
comfy and warm

but what’s this?
rocks in my socks
under the heels
pushing against toes

after each wash
clumps of lining worn away
‘til soles paper thin
like stepping on a door screen
all manner of pebble
let in

whoever coined the phrase
‘cotton comfortable’
never walked a mile
in these shoes
back to Wal-Mart
every six months
for another few pairs

and despite all of the above
or shall I say below?
wouldn’t trade my ‘sports’
for anything else
cause when they’re brand new
I’m dancing on air
