This First Night Without You

by Chris Sorrenti

This first night without you
Is a rude awakening
And though I’m thankful for my freedom
As you are yours
The silence is already
Almost too much to bear
As often
The cats sitting patiently
By the doorway
Await your return
Sadly this time later than sooner
If at all

And though it may never come
I’m grateful for the time
We spent together
Without question
I do love you
For turning my world upside down
But in a good way
Given me a much needed new prescription
On myself and the world around
As in our own chaos
For a time together
Made that same world right
