Four in the Morning, Two Later On

by Ken Harnisch

By the Keurig machine lie
The bottles of pills that I’m told
I need to keep me humming, although
I’ve discovered when I don’t ingest
My humming voice can croon a tune
Just fine.

I hum ditties from the sixties as I
Unscrew the childproof cap
Thinking a child might have better
Fortune than my crumbling fingers
And aching joints; Still, with a burst
Of manic energy I uncork them all
In strained progression.

Here the ones colored stone
And that one coral and this one small
And bright sky blue. I cup them all in
The holy palm and throw my head back to receive
This morning’s pharmaceutical communion.

Now I am blessed to know the palpitations lessen
And the pressure drops and the energy I used to
Have can now return in fits and starts. There, while I sigh,
I can look back on days that went for miles and try to fill
My lungs without the wheeze brought on by the return
Of the vernal equinox.

Later, there are pills to be taken
In the darkness; some near echo of
What I gulped this morning with a glass
Of something, all in the name, though I am
Most skeptical, of keeping me alive.

I relate completely to this. Just had to add 4 new meds to my line up, heart doing an odd beat. So far, so good. Especially love this - "I cup them all in The holy palm and throw my head back to receive This morning’s pharmaceutical communion." All I can say is, those docs better know what they're talking about. :)

I also take pill upon pill both morning and night. It seems the price of growing older or up or something. Nice write! And just think they call being a doctor "practicing medicine"??
