Sinner

by George Hoerner

What the hell
Does that mean?
Someone who does
What someone else, god?, doesn’t like
Well here I am

Are there no degrees of sin
I’d probably be in the top 10
No conditional sins?
I’d at least be in the top 100
Here we go ‘round the mulberry bush

Lust, well, ya no doubt √
Gluttony, ice cream certainly √
Greed, I’m sure from someone’s perspective √
Sloth, again no doubt √
Wrath, ya my sister used to…… √
Envy, those guys who got all the girls √
Pride, more than I would have thought, considering √

So, I’m going to hell? Or someplace like it.
But I don’t believe in ‘god’ or hell or heaven
Well the last two of which I think I make my own version
As it exists in my own mind which doesn’t affect anyone else
And ‘god’

He was made up by someone else and I’ve been trying
To understand for at least 60 years and haven’t made it
And death? Life is over as I know it
And after?

The little I know says I will decompose
I’m not sure how long that really takes and I don’t care
Ultimately what I once was ends up back as molecules, or
Maybe back to atoms, which over centuries or eons might
Be scattered around earth or what is left of it or
If the sun explodes who knows my atoms or particles could
End up going in a lot of different directions

Would we ever meet up again?
Probably not in any way we would recognize
But the universe works in ways we still don’t know
Your guess is at least as good and probably better …..

not at all offensive, George...witty and refreshing and damn good philosophy, I'm thinking...from someone who has had acquaintance himself with the seven deadly sins.

Dawn's comment makes me wonder about the mathematics of sin and punishment. If that had been a catholic priest I guarantee there would have a numbered list of prayers with a Rosary... Like you, George, I look at the concept of God, Heaven, Hell, and Life beyond Death with an awful lot of questions... none of which have any real-world answers. Fantasy, all of it - but the stories have a moral that is worth a thought or two, perhaps.

Also... I really dig that second to last set of lines. :)

Needs, sexual, monetary, attitudinal, spiritiual, conceptual, skeptical, tide and ebb. Our belief in all these systems tide and ebb as well, as well they should or shouldn't. The universe and all that is, tidal in it will ebb and then where will we be? I think in the end the only thing left will be the question, a scratching of the head, which is always a neat place for a new beginning.
