Multicultural Blues

by Chris Sorrenti

Mahmuud is a friendly guy, perhaps a little odd
the god he worships still teaches him
his wife is something he owns
I see him working in the mailroom
half asleep on the job
fasting all day in answer to the holy book
yet unable to meet life's demands

Spends a lot of time on the phone to his woman
barking out Arabic commands
his English is clear, a good conversationalist
yet when the boss asks why the mail isn't done
Mahmuud doesn't understand

Today, the mailroom fired its immigrant from Libya
someone said not to worry
he has a university degree
but you can bet when Mohammed moved the mountain
he didn't do it on an empty stomach

I read 'feasting' for fasting, and wondered if this wasn't based on a typical UK male employee, but then the 'good conversationalist' registered.
Intriguing narrative perspective & sound story-telling.
