Gate Keeper
by Chris Sorrenti
every so often we see remnants
of the monster you could have become
serrated fragments of reptilian past
fueled by the narcotic, adolescent naiveté
thankfully burned off
in the scale shed of its own deception
what plans the dark master had in store
if you had not rebelled, evolved
the beast once imprisoning you
now safely locked behind so many brain cells
its howls still audible when put to paper
time released so as not to cause alarm
showing us the seeds of misery and sorrow
if ever to give our own demons a free hand
