i imagine poets laughing

by JJ Johnson

The only solution to a curious situation
These are nonsense lines of nothingness
Created by a random word generator
Programmed with common phrases
With undefined similar relationships
Appearing to have real meaning
Though deeply, or perhaps just vaguely emotional
While seemingly thoughtful
So as to get responses of high praise
For no reason other than to laugh at the fooled
And perhaps deservedly so
Because anyone who can make a bit of sense from nonsense
Deserves to be fooled by a poetry machine
In fact there are websites that will create faux poems from nothing
Now it appears this device has infiltrated deep underground
Where we felt safe from phantoms and ghosts in our attics
Because we never go up there and the door stays forever locked
Yet somehow they escape through the cracks each Halloween
And dig their way down to the vaults of fine poetry
Mocking readers who should know better than to be tricked
Where the treaters are cheaters behind masks of bored tricksters
While all I can do is read the mind numbing rhymes that often do not
Scratching my head until my brain is exposed and leaps out of my skull
I refuse, I will never play this ridiculous game of complimenting a fraud
I know who you are and it sickens me to laugh at poets who read automated trash
Stroking your mechanical ego repeating the punch-line, "the joke is on you"
But you're too deaf to hear, unless that's how they define def-poets
And all this time I thought you were using Google-translate from your foreign tongue

Author's Note: Well, I don't know with certainty who they are or if anyone really is using a generator to come up with poems, but I've known about them for a few years and they typically come up with mundane poems about nothing meaningful. I generally just ignore poems I think are manufactured by a computer program. I could be wrong and hurt someone's feelings... but since I keep seeing them, it does make me wonder.

Well, this is pretty fascinating. So, of course, I have to Google such an idea and came up with Heretical Rhyme Generator among other sites. Who knew!! One of the first things you read is: "This assault on the aesthetic brought to you by" so and so.... So I suppose if one does not claim they have written the poem, all is well. What you seem to be suggesting is many do just the opposite. Another form of ghost writing? You've written a strong indictment here. Loved your Halloween references with the locked attic. I bet students would love this little aid. Very revealing, JJ. Thanks.
