In Your Shadow

by Brian Francis

I did not know you
when you were a young man
When you carried a rifle on your shoulder
I did not know you
When you stood against the threat for me
When the tides of war carried you to distant places
I did not know you
When you suffered the wounds of battle
When your friends fell at your side and you carried on
I did not know you

I know you now
by the way you are loyal
by the way you have taught us to stand tall
I know you now
by the stories of the battles you've had to fight
By the sadness in your eyes when you reflect on days past

I see in you now
All that has made my life a happy one
Honor and sacrifice protecting ours
I see in you now
the burdens you have carried these many years
Uncomplaining you've carried on

I understand now
and I am grateful to you and your friends
for all you've done
I understand now
you are my heros
and I will teach my children
about your sacrifice
I understand now
and I want to say
Thank You for everything

Really a fine poem of gratitude. A nice evolution of understanding here. Thank you.
