The Morning After by Chris Sorrenti
the sun shines like a spotlight
quick! squeeze your eyes tight
too late - it has found you
no going back to sleep now
the smallest of sounds
amplified ad infinitum
roll over in bed
covering head with pillow
but it won’t stop the drum
pounding between your ears
giving you no choice
but remember the crime
only time will pay for
“encore?!” your temples bellow
“we’ve seen this play too often before!”
“why must the curtain be raised again?”
cries your stomach
taking a turn for the worst
on your knees over the toilet bowl
vowing it’ll never happen again
until the next morning after
