Of A Mouse That Learned To Roar by Chris Sorrenti
for Sandra R
shyness - such an ambivalent animal
easily misinterpreted
especially when applied to a male of the species
still finding his way among the wild oats
of how to sow and who to sow to
in the maze between boy and man
and whose to argue
that ugly ducklings or in this case mice
come in all shapes and sizes
and when a female of the species
feels wronged amid that journey of inexperience
from rodent to white swan or possibly even lion
oh how quickly a name
and words of ridicule come out
Mickey Mouse for example
a title well suited to a suitor who slips on the pass
and yes in some cases
the label could mean a lifetime of traumatism
but to an ugly duckling still finding his way
among the wild oats
of how to sow and who to sow to
the name merely incentive to grow ever larger
metamorphosize in unexpected manner and directions
Mickey soon to become Mighty Mouse
no more an ugly duckling or rodent
but lion with the wings of a white swan
its roar now heard all over the world
neither ferocious beast but rather gentle giant
bearing no ill will towards the labeler
but a debt of thanks for being there
at a crucial point in the journey of boy to man
and helping him find his true calling
