When I Lie Awake

by Alison McKenzie

Is it you dreaming of me
At night, when I can’t sleep,
At night, when your name invades
My right to privacy?

I feel this other
Reality
She is not there
And he is not here
And nothing ever interrupted
Our peace,
The knowing that passed all knowing.

I still don’t understand
The way things turned,
How you went one way,
And sent me across
To this vast emptiness
That is always my now.

Nonetheless, I am here,
And you are there,
And this current reality
Is the life I live without you.

Where you are still in my heart,
Where we still exist in some room
I am not allowed to enter.

Where the truth is that
I love you still.
