Remember as a kid
When you crawled down
Headfirst and feet up
Under the blankets
Down and down
Into the warm wombdark hollow
Down you went
Sinking like a deepsea diver
Till you swam in the infinity of that soft cave
Among the dust and socks and smells
The strange familiar darkness
That swelled with no end
Of mysteries and longings
You could not name
Or the times you crept
Into the wardrobe at the end of the hall
And parted the cool musty fur of the old mink coats
To lose yourself in the dark folds of limitlessness
Till you heard the call to come and eat
Or do your homework
And the spell was broken
I, for one, had an affinity for crawling into the dryer - or hiding within the dirty clothes hamper built into the wall of our bathroom... or climbing onto the roof of our house via tree limbs and waiting to spy upon father coming in from work; or climbing said tree to the highest point I dared climb.
