Walking Down Main Street

by Chris Sorrenti

   for Mel Blanc
  RIP 1908 – 1989

I’m something resembling Roadrunner
legs - a circular blur
sidewalk switched to animation
speeding my way towards home

“Step on the crack - break your mother's back”
if it's true - my mom's a pretzel
each line I blast from - stretch for
storefront windows - disjointed movie
far stranger than favorite cartoon

Coyote with cup in hand
gets off his hind
preparing to intercept me
before he speaks
I'm gone MEEP MEEP
coins safe still in my pocket

Red light means stop
listen to Elmer Fudd
disguised as bag lady
through holes in teeth slurs
"Dat pesky wabbit stole my whiskey"

Light winks green
and I'm away
reaching for a new cartoon
"But why are there statues on the sidewalk?"
I ask a fellow roadrunner
distracted by - though ignoring me
he zooms ahead
into the back of one

I laugh at his misfortune
MMMWAHAHAHA
a Yosemite Sam
jaywalking across the great divide
stopped suddenly in tracks
by familiar looking cop -

"EEEYAHHH...what's up doc???"
