This Prison - My Life

by Chris Sorrenti

I’ve accepted it now
this prison - my life
nothing I can do to change it
‘cept the odd rearrangement
a purchase here
a trip somewhere
but only one way I can truly escape

You look astonished
say it’s just a phase
staring through the bars of your own life
but search your heart and must agree
most turn away from this reality
unwilling to surrender
lock themselves in smaller prisons
to hide from the broken dream
madness tailor-made for their personal walls

The rich and famous don’t have it any easier
perhaps only larger cells
but theirs have cameras
and when friends go home
we’re all alone inside ourselves
those walls seem so much higher

I’ve accepted it now
this prison - my life
and as I embrace this reality
contemplate...
what a masterpiece of madness I am
