Table for One by Richard VinceIt’s so easy to be in the corner,
Looking out at the whole world
As it turns; you cling on and
Hope you don’t get left behind.
Always around, but never there.
Sentences decline to isolated words
And words to pictures, at once
Symbolic and meaningless,
There merely to ensure
They don’t forget you.
This isn’t how I would play it:
Mine would be an idyllic life,
Making my own rules,
Keeping my own time,
Everything and everyone at arms’ length.
The world would be mine again
And I would expand into it,
Spreading like octopus ink to
Darken the entire ocean.
It’s so easy to be in the corner,
Though, seeing the whole world
Without needing to be a part of it.
Keeping my eyes open is hard
When my eyelids are as heavy as
My exhausted heart.
