My Heart’s Mind

by Alison McKenzie

I will not write of regret,
How the setting sun
Sounds like the quiet sigh
Of a person’s last moments.

I will breathe lilacs instead,
Dance on the beach,
Lick the frosting off the spatula,
Let go of the balloon,
Then become the release of it,
And fly to the stars.

A fine recipe for how to spend a life. Thanks, Ali.
