Lake On The Mountain

by Chris Sorrenti

there’s mystery
in old Prince Edward County
near the town of Picton
looking out over the Canadian side
of Lake Ontario

what the Mohawks call
Onokenoga
Lake on the Mountain
Lake of the Gods

early settlers believed
the lake to be bottomless
more recently
scientists’ sonar pings
never returned

a natural curiosity
say the locals
a constant water level maintained
with no apparent source
defying all gravitational theory

geologists speculate
a limestone sinkhole
fed from a distance
through subterranean channels
on a promontory
high above the Bay of Quinte

and it’s been said that those
giving their spirits to the lake
either willingly
or through accident
bodies never recovered
