Flipper Goes To War by Chris Sorrenti
and here I thought the only other intelligent life form on the planet
Flipper the dolphin with a poipouse had one up on us
when was the last time you saw that finned mammal with the unmistakable smile
hop into an A-10 Warthog or M-1 Abrams or worse (gasp)
press that button of all buttons?
granted he’s had that long standing animosity with his neighbor the shark
and who’s to argue an armed Iraqi in frogman attire is any different
we could see it coming though
how science fiction so easily becomes science reality these days
I’m sure Dolly the Sheep would happily concur
egad! Flipper and his buddies have been drafted into the Navy Seals
the official line being they’re only looking for mines in the Persian Gulf
the big question of course is when do we get our first interview on CNN?
no doubt the US military have also trained an interpreter
to fill us in on all the fishy details
I somehow believe though that Flipper
the dolphin with a poipouse will have the last laugh
while the boys in khaki are still slugging it out in Baghdad
he and his friends will have realized the folly
of finned salutes and swimming at attention
when expected back at their aqua barracks suddenly gone AWOL
headed off to bluer more intelligent seas

04/19/2015 Author's Note: Having a little fun, being flippant about Flipper. Based on news during the second Gulf War (2003) that dolphins and sea lions were being trained to do various underwater military tasks. The research/training goes back however to the 1960s, when both the U.S. and Soviets were experimenting with this kind of covert activity. For more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_dolphin. And for the record, in the 1960s TV series, Flipper was in fact played by female bottlenose dolphins. Female dolphins were chosen because they are less aggressive than males and as a result their skin is usually free from scars and other disfigurations acquired in altercations between male dolphins.
