Baby Steps by Chris Sorrenti
for my parents, Vincent and Dorothy
who gave birth and started me on this incredible journey
It’s a race against time
Getting my babies out
Fixing them up as best I can
Only so many years left
Maybe even months
Who knows what the future will bring
All through life they’ve been my sword
Shield of armor
Protecting and guiding
Projecting my thoughts feelings emotions
Of how I interpret the world
Inside and around me
Whether concrete places
Or states of mind
Always knew I wouldn’t be here forever
But only after my parents were gone
Did it really sink in
Lit a fire beneath me
In a positive way
And now facing the last leg
Of my own journey
I’ve got nothing better to do than
Getting my babies out
Fixing them up as best I can
In the beginning
The process was foreign
Creative birthing learned
One step at a time
The products of opportunity
A combination of imagination determination
Being in the right place at the right time
And through it all
With a little help from my friends
Always reminding me
If you have anything important to do
In this life then get it done now
For who knows what tomorrow will bring
So I’ve followed their advice
And glad I did
While getting my babies out
Fixing them up as best I can

Posted by John Harder on 04/15/15 at 01:37 AM A provocative reminder of the finite nature of life. To me 'fixing them up as best I can' doesn't really mean combing their hair, but more preparing them for things to come. For the unknown. Excellent poem. |
