Who’s Behind the Door?

by Susan Q Tomas

I work in a place where I have
a button that opens doors.
When the cameras are working
I can see who is behind the door.
When they are down,
Who’s behind the door?
Most times someone knocks,
I slowly open the door.
A visitor, who can come out.
Sometimes I hear pounding and screaming.
I know not to open the door.
Sometimes I hear pushing on the door.
I know not to open the door.
Sometimes I hear a knock
I crack open the door and see someone
that I can not let out.
Those are the scariest times.
They want out and to go home
to a home that doesn’t exist anymore.

Author's Note: It has been a long time since I have written a poem, so this is a work in progress. Maybe I should go into more detail about these people. This is not a metaphor. I work in an Assisted Living Memory Care community. All of our residents have dementia. However, it could be a metaphor for you. If someone is pounding at your door, don’t open it. And usually when someone knocks, it is safe to open the door, but not always.

Work in progress or not, I like what you've done here Susan. Definitely provokes a sense of forebode, and even more scary/tragic when the factor of Dementia is added.
