Let It Be

by Chris Sorrenti

little did we know
what those three words would come to mean
Let It Be prophetically equaling Let It End

and little did the nun
who taught us music in grade eight foresee
as she placed the LP on the turntable
that Mother Mary would soon oversee a divorce
no one ever dared to imagine

most songs on the album subtly heralding the finalé
those not
mere candy coating for the bitter pill to come

the words ‘on our way home’ in Two Of Us
I Dig A Pony calling for escape
from the prison they all felt trapped in
I Me Mine representing the individuality
each Beatle yearned for
the title I’ve Got A Feeling
and lyrics ‘get back to where you once belonged’
speaking for themselves

One After 909
a one way ticket to ride away
from the chart topping glory...and madness
of earlier years
that literally set musical history on its ear

to this day
the ever melancholy tone and words of
The Long And Winding Road
haunt all us Beatlephiles
who in hindsight would agree
it above all other tunes rang the death knell

and finally
Across The Universe’s ‘nothing’s going to change my world’
oh dear John Lennon
I think you knew very well
how ironic those words would ring
as much today as in 1970

Author's Note: The Beatles were a major inspiration and influence on my own writing. This is one of the few poems I wrote in tribute to them.
