But Was It Love?

by Chris Sorrenti

all through life
certainty uncertain
even if only the few
set this heart throbbing
no billboard lit up
to confirm the sale

caring for the chosen ones
there is no question
to put my own life on the line
to save theirs
I have no qualm
and much heartache indeed
when eventual incompatibility
signaled withdrawal

but was it love?

the question’s answered
only through trust in intuition
reassures the voice inside

My friend at 18 said as I took a break and my lips left hers, 'It's only hormones you know.' But as I'm about to turn 78 I know that was only partially true. Nice write Chris.
