Jewel Tone

by Aaron Blair

You're a girl.
They cut you open and then
sew you up with gold thread,
so your scars will be pretty,
and when you bleed rubies,
they gather them up,
so they can make a fortune from your pain.
They tell you that you want this,
and you do. You want to shine so much
that you blind yourself,
grind the diamonds in your eyes to a paste.
