Brazilian Knots

by Desdemona Sinestra

She said

"Call us a cab
And let's go somewhere bad
There's a light in the sky
That we can follow all night."

"Listen to the sky tearing open.
Listen to the breeze.
Let's just die.
Let's just die before the moon
Disappears."

But I pulled off all my skin
Into long bloody strips
Twisted them together
And made them into whips
Barbed them with my teeth
Lashed sky and self and bed
And whoever's underneath
Shining with such a troublesome red

She said

"Let's just ditch the cab
And make us a bed right here
The road is warm from the trucks and the noise
There's a hollow in our heads
We can follow until it's light."

The moon is gone.
Oh god.
The end.
It's gone.
