Ode to 1034 Washington Street

by June Labyzon

ODE TO 1034 - FLOOR 4
I discovered you today
explored all your cracks
and crevices and imperfections.
Though I've known you for nearly
three years, today was
the first time I paid
attention.
I fell in love with you today
craving to know all your history,
everything about you.
of children born and lost
of stories told unknown to
me…
what music played
what tears shed
what burned on the stove
on Sundays
what words were spleen
tender
angry
whispers in the dark.
Though there is a bit of sun coming
through your Washington street windows,
it is not as much as usual.
The dimness is sinister.
You harbor secrets
I will never know.
And, I am jealous,
of those who dwelled
inside you before me.

just perfect June. another gem. you know on occasion I happen by that street and look up and think, I used to know a person who lived way up there and wrote some wonderful odes there and climbed all those infernal stairs.
