Still Hunting

by Leonard M Hawkes

Mid-October
And I feel I should be on the mountain:
Sitting 'round a campfire
Eating chile, rolls, and apple pie;
Listening to war stories,
Drinking Coke "on the sly."

The lantern hiss,
The rush of night in the pines,
The must-smell of canvas;
Relishing friendship and camp-craft,
Man memories, boy talk,
And the honest laugh.

Rich goodness,
Yearly ritual as real as Christmas,
Affirmation of culture,
True brotherhood of the wilderness,
Coming of age--lost
--Not veiled in forgetfulness.

You make me smell my dad's old tent and think back to feeling honored to be the only girl cousin on some of the hunting trips (well, I was the only girl cousin for years, so.... :) ) in Oregon. Watching my dad light the lantern was one of those special camping rituals. From a heavily populated Mormon area, your drinking Coke on the sly makes me chuckle (not being Mormon myself). Obviously you make this yearly event come alive for this reader and it does speak of a special bond we all had. Well done and thanks!

In reading your poem I had an image in my head of guys just being guys far away from all distractions. It felt like the word FREE. Thank you for your poem. Lucia

This evoked such a sense of reverie. I could see you there...

Living in the south Mid October still has my mind on the beach, I loved the contrast to my surroundings that this poem presented. The honest laugh, I can almost hear it if I concentrate just a little bit. Thank you for this read.
