I Had To Turn Away

by Chris Sorrenti

I loved the way you looked at me
but had to turn away
if things were very different
I’d have left my gaze upon yours
our eyes to laugh
in love with each other
and never to look away again

In a recurring crystal daydream
I see us at a rock concert
dressed in ceremonial garbs of denim blue
any anger of our strangeness
to be sacrificed away
as the music thunders all around
sweeping aside any uncertainty

But then I realize
I’m just a victim of the ballad
playing on the radio
and I love you in my dreams
like the couple in that song
just a simple rhythmic message
beating on and on to the day
when I can gaze deep into your eyes

Wistful, romantic, engaging.
