Leaving

by Britt Zimmerman

Mountains have jutted up between us
And wildfires ignite from deep within my soul
and spread through the trees.
And we breathe in the smoke from opposite sides

We have built this together,
Let it ebb and flow through different seasons
But winter's storm has gotten the best of us this time.

And she shakes us to the core
Whips the wind through my hair
and chills us until we are frozen inside
and there is nowhere left to go.

And the hollow in my soul becomes
the blackest of night's
And it swallows up your silhouette
as I watch you walk away...
