Dear Artist

by John Harder

Under which light would you render me
Bursting forth in gallant stance
as a noble knight seeking romance
and a sun beam in the distance?

Perhaps reading under a tree
A pensive face touched with a breeze
Fading overalls with one strap hanging
a stalk of wheat between my teeth

Are you more of an abstract artist?
A portrait of sharp edges
bold colors and polygons that cut
until the shape of my face is unnatural

You could portray me as an army general
from the war of 1812
a musket in one hand
and bloodied rapier in the other

Wherever your inspiration leads
I put myself in your capable hands
It's not for the subject to decide
Paint me as freely as you see fit

I have nothing to hide.

Author's Note: Philip F De Pinto's comment helped me come up with the final stanza. Thanks for the nudge Philip. :)

I wouldn't be so concerned with not knowing whether this poem hasn't a close, but with the fact that you have one heck of a fine creation on you hands. I think no matter how we, the ones who sit for artists are concerned, artists must be at liberty to paint us in the manner they see fit, in their own fashion and not as we wish to be painted. And this isn't something you don't already know, but if you stand close enough to a painting, it becomes less objective, i.e. if paintings can truly be objective, and take on the mantle of abstract. I think all art and all expression is abstractual and if if looks like us, it is merely coincidental.

I like the painting depicted in this poem. I like the unintentionally romantic angle, would call this victorian-modern. You see, you invented a genre! Wow!
