To Die Alone on Coney Island

by V. Blake

you can't treat love chemically,
apparently.

ride the line from end to end.
count the eyes that meet yours back.
internalize tears till your insides rust
and pretend it's your inner monologue
playing through her headphones.
think something cruel and wait for a reaction.

leave when they tell you.
cross the platform and go back the way you came:

hard to say if there's an ocean beyond the sea.
pin your arms to your sides
and hug yourself to death.

Really a fine description of being alone in a huge crowd. "a million million souls ignoring your role in the monster consuming the boardwalk." - loved this and of course those last two unique, fantastic lines. Thanks!

A very sad commentary on loneliness and isolation even in a crowd.

"think something cruel and wait for a reaction." Oh I adore this line. See if the world gasps or not..truly a lonely thing to think..

You've described the pain of being lonely in a crowd very well Vince. And on Coney island, too, where I've walked the crowded boardwalk in such a state.

Agree with Quinton's observation-- this is quite powerful, especially to anyone who has ever lived alone in a city. Thank you.
