Star Trek: The Subtle Observation by Chris Sorrenti
How I envy you Jean-Luc Picard
living my life long dream
the Borg and Romulans unable to hold a phaser to you
But what’s this constant tugging at your uniform?
standing up - sitting down - every episode!
could Utopia really be uncomfortable Captain sir?
respectfully - even the Ferengi have that problem licked
So much technology unable to fit you properly
here’s hoping the writers can someday beam you to a tailor shop
where no man has gone before!

06/18/2014 Author's Note: Unless a Trekkie, you may not get this one. Based on the TV series, Star Trek: The Next Generation. In watching various episodes, I soon noticed a pattern, whereby Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by Sir Patrick Stewart) would routinely tug at his uniform, especially when standing up or sitting down, as if it didn’t fit him properly. When the show finally jumped to the big screen (1994 - same year I wrote this), the uniform tugging had stopped, so maybe others...or Stewart himself had also noticed. In doing some research on this subject, I came across several blogs, jokingly referring to it as the "Picard Maneuver."

Posted by Richard Vince on 06/18/14 at 11:18 PM presumably going big screen brought a sufficiently large budget to allow for a tailor, or maybe more flexible fabric? perhaps the great Sir Patrick finally had the guts to show someone a photo of the uniform he really wanted and say "make it so". |
Posted by Ken Harnisch on 06/19/14 at 08:08 PM LOL...funny how you can watch something for years and never see. But you're right, Chris. Makes you wonder if "make it so, Number one" wasn't really spelled S-E-W and he was just pulling his shirt out so Commander Riker knew where to apply the thread! |
Posted by Uriel Tovar on 06/20/14 at 07:55 PM he obviously never stopped by garrak's shop when he visited ds9 |
Posted by John Harder on 06/20/14 at 11:51 PM Being a Trek fan myself, I've noticed this for a long time. Riker did it too, possibly because he emulated Picard in hopes of getting the captain's chair. |
