Troubled

by Don Matley

Troubled
Down to the river I went and spent time
Too fast not taking it in before it passed
A floating oak leaf sailed by
Losing its brown crackling skin
As the water made it spin and spin
Troubled
I followed this torrent stream
As my life trickled out in a dream
Of what might have been
If not wasted on chances I never took
If only I had paused for a second look
Troubled
Don’t even know why
I never gave importance a try
Took the easy road, always giving in, never caring about
What might have been
Troubled
I let you go and watched you, struggling to stay afloat
Troubled
I let you waste away.
Oh would it were, that the past was today
How could I not toss you some saving hope?
Frozen I stood as the river raced by
I did nothing, just watched you go, knowing not why
And now I have only the river and not you because I never
Troubled

Good use of the word 'Troubled' in repetition, Don, to deliver the message of regret in what was and could have been. Excellent way of closing off also, if not providing you with closure.

Significant use of analogy in this poignant poem of "if only".
