how to write a story

by Gail Wolper

Everyone I know goes away in the end-Jonny Cash in 'Hurt'

he asked me to write a story
as i write great poems
so why not a story, there is some money in that
and i try, but i cant remember
i try to remember the stories but
as i do my heart breaks again
for a good story is couched on one's own memories

sometimes ones memories are simply too strong
for we all know that love is not a free ride
but a curse and a broken hallelujah
and when one sings that song too many times
it is hard to remember how to sing
and braiding my hair with it
day by day has woven it into
this fallen life which needs
continual piecing together
to build some semblance
of a house with
strong walls for the night and i am doing that
night after night with my heart in a cage
to keep it safe for every time i let it out
well you know, so the best thing
i've come up with is to let it out in
short stretches just for water
and fertilizer, yes but
then there is the question of a story
and by then i cant remember
i want to, but i get past that first poem
and get lost in that forest
thick brush of my mind
reduced to crossword and sudoku
so for now i do believe
it is necessary
to only write poems

Congratulations, Gail, on POTD. This is a remarkably well written poem that tells quite the essential story that basically describes the all of what we attempt to say when we write, which tend to fall into things we remember and things we forget and for expediency sake need to invent.
