Hip

by Jared Orlando

It is so hip
to live where
stores are run by hipsters
It is so hip
to live in a hip part of town
where all the hip people live
It is so hip
to wear large-framed eyeglasses
with no prescription
It is so hip
to be white
with an Asian girlfriend
It is so damn hip
to read while
waiting for the crosswalk
It is so hip
to wear a beard
and suspenders
It is so hip
to bring the past
into the present
It is so hip
to compost
and recycle
It is so hip
to not
watch television
It is so hip
to not own
a television
It is so hip
to own
and use a typewriter
It is so hip
to be a writer
Everything in and of itself
Is so damn hip
With our pocket squares
And our vintage hats
And our going to the horse races
And then dying

Every thing is hip except having to replace one! My wife has a tee shirt from her surgeon and it says "The Best Hips in Town"! She has had both of them done.

The poem resonates very much I can identify with each of these statements, but you fail to show why you feel negatively about any of these things. To me, they do not seem so offensive. Therefore, I feel the poem is incomplete, and look forward to you colpleting it and offering a deeper version of the same.

I disagree with the assertion that this poem is incomplete. Everyone is socialized to create an externally projected persona informed by the preconceived notions and preoccupations of the groups with which they associate. Undoubtedly, at one point or another, the author himself has adopted changes in personal style to reflect the trends of his counterparts. The poem is not meant to have a didactic effect on the hipster community by casting in a negative light what underlay its motivations; instead, the main thrust is to illustrate that, no matter what we do to try to make something meaningful of existence by subscribing to the trends of the day, we all will die the same.
