zimbabwe

by Vivienne Grant

travelling back
we take the north road
travelling back
looking up

travelling back
filled with longing
looking forward
to the past

once we’re here the shell’s familiar
but the contents surprise
it’s all changed
retro-morphosed?

the memories linger they breathe from the brick
façades evoke sweet pain but deeper within
the cakes are stale
the pupils post – colonial
rasta rules at city hall
3rd world traffic jams tourists hawkers
the phone service isn’t
but friendliness is here to stay

still it’s home to me

- my roots embedded
in the ayre of the matabele

I really liked the lines "looking forward to the past" and "the memories linger they breathe from the brick facades." Congrats on POTD!
