One Thin Thread by Alison McKenzie
Tonight's bite of sandwich
Sits acrid between the head
And heart.
And I understand
The direction of tonight's wind,
How it chases the temperature
Down to a dangerous low,
But still speaks to me
In hushed whispers of
Unconditional acceptance.
Frozen tears
Lay, useless, upon fine lines.
You would think the eyes
Would have enough sense
To remain closed,
Protected,
Blind.
While my heart
Attempts to reassemble itself
In shades of today's blue,
Breath only comes
In the shallow sharps
Of songs that
Cannot be sung.
The floor opens -
My mind races to catch up
With that gaping reality,
One last, fragile thought
To love myself enough -
Just enough.
